Objectives
Students should be aware of the diversity of cell types and should obtain theoretical knowledge on the morphology, functional aspects and biogenesis of cytoplasmic and nuclear structures so as to understand the functional dynamics of cells. Students must also acquire basic knowledge on histology and microscopy techniques. .
Learning outcomes and competences
Students are expected to develop their study abilities and to acquire fundamental knowledge enabling them to follow future developments of science in the area of Cell Biology. The development of observation skills is another goal of the curricular unit and students should be able to identify the main types of cells and tissues in histological sections and recognise the various cellular structures in electron microscopy images

Characterisation and diversity of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Microscopes, microscopy techniques and other study methods in cell biology. Chemical components of the cell: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. DNA replication and transcription, RNA splicing, ribosomes and protein synthesis. Composition, structure and functions of biological membranes. The glycocalyx. Cytoskeleton and related structures: microtubules (cilia and flagella), microfilaments and intermediate filaments. Cell motility. Nucleus: nuclear envelope and nuclear pore transport, chromatin and chromosomes, the nucleolus and the synthesis of ribosomal RNA. Cell cycle and division: mitosis, meiosis and cytokinesis. Ultrastructure, functions and biogenesis of cytoplasmic organelles: endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria, chloroplasts and peroxisomes. Extracellular matrix. Intercellular junctions. Gametes and fertilization. Apoptosis. Basics of histology.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Explanation of theoretical contents are supported by audiovisual tools. Laboratorial classes dedicated to microscopy techniques, observation of histological sections stained by diverse light microscopy techniques and observation of transmission electron microscopy images.
