Objectives
The student must acquire the following capacities/knowledge: morphological, structural and functional organization of chromosomes, mutations that can change this organization and application of these knowledge to veterinary pathology and evolution of species.
Program
Theorical programme: Cell Cycle: mitosis and meiosis, modifications during mitosis and meiosis. Chromosome anatomy. Euchromatin and heterochromatin. Ultrastucture of chromatin and chromosomes. Numerical and structural chromosome abnormalities. Sexual determination. Mutagenesis. Genotoxic agents. Cancer. Evolution of some species of domestic animals.
Practical programme: Cell cycle study. Chromosome preparation and banding techniques. Observation of metaphase chromosomes of different animals, without banding and with G-bands and organization of the karyotypes. Cytogenetic nomenclature and karyotype description. Analysis of the consequences of chromosomal abnormalities in gamete segregation.
