Full Professor at ICBAS – University of Porto. Member of the CIIMAR research centre.
Graduated in Aquatic Sciences from ICBAS (18/20, Fundação Eng.º António de Almeida Award). Approved in the Pedagogical Aptitude and Scientific Capacity Examinations (Histology and Embryology). PhD in Biomedical Sciences and Habilitation (Agregação) in Histology and Embryology. Completed courses from the 1st to the 3rd year of the Medical Degree (17/20).
Began his scientific career in October 1987 as an intern at the Cell Biology Laboratory (supervised by Prof. Carlos Azevedo) and was a research fellow of the former INIC (1989). Started teaching in December 1989 as a Teaching Assistant in Cell Biology (mentor: Prof. Carlos Azevedo). In 1991, after a public competition, he was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Histology and Embryology (mentor: Prof. Rogério Monteiro). Reached the top of the academic career (Full Professor) in December 2008.
Since 1991, he has held various management roles at ICBAS, CIIMAR and in support of central structures of the University of Porto. At ICBAS, he served as a member of the Pedagogical Council for 30 years (8 years as President), member of the Scientific Council for 24 years, and Director of 2nd and 3rd cycle study programmes, as well as Laboratory and Department Director. At CIIMAR, he was a Board Member for 7 years and President of the General Assembly for 6 years. He is currently Director of the Histology and Embryology Laboratory (ICBAS) and Principal Investigator of the AMTOX – Animal Morphology and Toxicology team (CIIMAR).
His teaching activities include courses in human and comparative histology and embryology, research methods and scientific communication, xenobiotic exposure and fate in the organism, and toxicopathology of aquatic animals.
His main research interests include: comparative liver microanatomy and hepatocellular dynamics; exposure, mechanisms and effects of endocrine disruptors, especially in the liver and gonads; structural and functional regulation of hepatocellularity, hepatic peroxisomes and lipid pathways by sex steroids and PPAR ligands; cytotoxicity of natural marine compounds on neoplastic cells.
He mentored or co-mentored > 22 MSc and 12 PhD students, and authored/co-authored > 215 articles in international indexed journals and 8 book chapters. H-index (Scopus) = 40.
