Apresentação Pessoal

Salomé Gomes got a first degree in Pharmacy at Universidade do Porto (UP) in 1993.
In 1994, she joined the group of Manuel Teixeira da Silva, at the Centro de Citologia Experimental, UP, where she started her PhD studies under the supervision of Rui Appelberg.

In 1999, she defended her PhD thesis entitled “The interaction between Mycobacterium avium and the macrophage” at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, UP.

In 2001 she was appointed as Assistant Professor at ICBAS, where she continues to teach Microbiology, currently as Associate Professor.

Salomé Gomes leads the research group "host Targets of Infection" at i3S. Her research activity focuses on the interaction of mycobacteria and other pathogens with their hosts, namely on the mechanisms of innate immune response, the alterations in the host’s iron metabolism occurring during infection and the role of macrophages in these processes. Additionally, she maintains collaborations with researchers from the Chemistry area for the development and testing of new compounds with anti-bacterial activity.
