Veterinary Sciences

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

The Doctoral Programme in Veterinary Sciences aims to promote advanced training in the field of Veterinary Sciences through research. This programme was designed to achieve levels of excellence. Offering a combination of a rigorous doctoral programme with guidance by researchers associated with research institutions of national and international merit in the different areas of basic and clinical sciences.

The School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) is recognised among the organic units of the University of Porto for its multidisciplinary characteristics in the field of Life Sciences, with particular emphasis on an educational, scientific, and cultural project that led to the foundation of this institution. Having as its priorities the promotion of fundamental and applied research activities, it stimulates the exchange of knowledge and experiences among its professors and researchers from different areas of knowledge.

We believe that the interdisciplinarity characteristics and attractive research opportunities have contributed to the creation of a pleasant and productive atmosphere that stimulates students to acquire a high level of scientific quality.

The doctoral programme consists of a 1st year with an annual curricular unit called "Probationary Year". A scientific profile acquired based on curricular units is usually compulsory, however, it is offered through modules or courses. The transfer of professional and scientific skills is carried out voluntarily, through courses, classes, and/or workshops designed for each particular candidate. The non-existence of fixed curricular units creates the possibility for the doctoral student to carry out a personalised initial training, allowing conciliation with other interests, as foreseen in an advanced training plan agreed with the Direction of the programme.

The curricular components of advanced training can be completed in a single semester or over the 2 semesters of the 1st year, up to a maximum limit of 30 credits. The remaining 30 credits of the "Probationary Year" unit necessarily include preparatory work (laboratory or other) to support the work leading to the doctoral thesis.

The remaining three years of the doctoral programme, corresponding to 180 credits, are dedicated to the preparation of an original thesis, particularly elaborated for this purpose and appropriate to the knowledge profile in the field of Veterinary Sciences.

The monitoring of the execution of the programme and the fulfilment of its objectives is carried out by an External Monitoring Committee, composed of three experts in the field of the cycles of studies external to the institution, namely:
- Professor Armando Carvalho Lousã - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon;
- Professor José Henrique Duarte Correia - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon;
- Professor Nuno Vieira de Brito -  Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo.

Among other requirements, foreseen in the Internal Regulation of the Doctoral Programme in Veterinary Sciences, it is considered an absolute condition for submission of the thesis to public defence the inclusion in it of at least 1 original article (full length paper) published or accepted for publication in an indexed international journal, whose 1st author must be the doctoral student.
