The course Structure and Dynamics of Research (EDTI) aims to promote advanced knowledge and critical analytical capacities over educational research methods, with a special attention to the process through which decisions regarding research methodologies were taken.
More specifically, the course has the following learning goals:
. foster an advanced knowledge in the field of educational research methodologies;
. produce interdisciplinary knowledge adequate for the systematic analysis and discussion of research projects in education;
. stimulate the production of original knowledge;
. create opportunities to contact relevant research projects and researchers.
Learning outcomes and competences
The course aims to foster the following learning results and competencies:
. capacity to systematically understand research projects in Education Sciences;
. capacity to critical analyze innovative methodological frameworks that are adequate to understand complex educational and social situations;
. capacity to derive creative solutions for the design of innovative projects that are adequate for understanding the complexity of educational and social situations.

The programme contents are structured in three main blocks:
1st block: Theoretical and epistemological conditions of research in education
socio-institutional, socio-political and epistemological conditions for the production of research in the educational sciences;
the relationship between theory and empirics in educational research;
validation, interpretation and theorisation
2nd block: Praxeologies of educational research
typologies of research, research designs and models of analysis
relational conditions of research work in education
narrativity, communication and language in educational research
ethics in educational research;
3rd block: Empirical work and research devices
ways of organising the empirical field (e.g. case studies, comparative studies, ...)
methodological workshops (biographical methods, ethnography, construction and analysis of questionnaires, interviews, focused discussion groups, content analysis, discourse analysis; digital methods).

To be successful, the student must attend 75% of the classes.

Examinations or Special Assignments
Assessment is based on the research project (30-50 pages) presented by the doctoral student that involves the identification and operationalization of the research questions and a first draft of the methodological “how-to-do”. The Project will be discussed by a jury of three (or four) professors/researchers, including the supervisor (and co-supervisor), at the end of the second semester.

Students who are legally exempt from attending classes must take a test to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required and defined in the Curricular Unit form. Students who find themselves in this situation should contact the course leader within the first 3 weeks of the course to inform him/her of the situation, define how the test will be carried out and its timetable.
