The SENSYS project is anchored in three work packages: novel sensors development, network implementation and management and data aggregation methodologies.
Novel sensors are needed to detect and measure accurately, in-situ and in real-time, contaminants, explosives, extreme values of physical and chemical and biological analytes.
Networking of wireless sensors is severely constrained by the environment and sensor transceiver characteristics, as well as energy limitations. These constraints are more severe in the case of remote and difficult access sensors, for which recharging the battery is costly, and communications range is shorter. Underground sensors networks require a large density of sensors, adding to the scalability requirements of the routing protocol. Mobile systems (vehicles and people) do not have so strict energy constraints, but on the other hand have to deal with a very dynamic topology. All these network issues have to be dealt in innovative ways.
The huge volume of data generated in wide geographical areas demands novel data aggregation strategies, where data is reduced/summarized/aggregated by each node before transmission, enabling autonomous operation over long periods of time. |
