Henrique M. Salgado graduated in Applied Physics (Optics and Electronics) from the University of Porto in 1985 and received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Systems from the University of Wales in 1993 and the equivalence to PhD in 1997 from Faculty of Engineering University of Porto. Presently he is Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Porto, where he teaches courses in the area of Telecommunications in the master and doctoral programs. Formerly from 1997-1999, he was Research Fellow at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University College London, UK and from 1993-1994 Research Assistant at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Systems, Bangor, UK. In 2008 he was visiting Professor at CERN - Centre for Particle Physics, Geneva, in the framework of the ACEOLE project.
He has experience in management positions as member of the Scientific Council of INESC TEC and from 2005–2019 as area leader and project manager of the Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) group of the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit of INESC. He founded the OET area in 2005, after successfully having attracted funding (440 k¤) within the framework of the reequipment programme of the Foundation for Science and Technology. He was also the Coordinator of the Telecommunications section of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers, FEUP and from 2002–2003 was the Coordinator of the course in “Optical Communications and Technology”, of the MSc degree in Electrical Engineering and Computers–MEEC, FEUP. In 2009/2010 and 2012/2013 was the Director of the PhD programme in Telecommunicationsbetween the Universities of Minho, Aveiro and Porto (Map-tele) being a member of the scientific committee of this programme since 2007.
He was twice member of the evaluation panel of doctoral grants in the area of Electrical Engineeringof FCT, and was also project evaluator for Agência de Invoção and the German Research Council. He is an associate editor of the journal Sensors and is called upon to regularly review scientific articles and participate in the organization and technical committee of various conferences.
He was involved as a principal investigator in 9 projects with national funding and participated as a researcher in 20 more projects, 9 of which with European funding, some of which as local coordinator. He published over 200 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences, five book chapters and registered five patents, being a regular reviewer for several scientific journals from IEEE and IET in the area of optical communications, telecommunications and antennas. His research interests include radio-over-fibre technology and microwave photonics, digital equalization in coherent optical systems, all-optical networks, modelling of nonlinearities and design of compact multi-band antennas. He is a member of the Photonics and Communications societies of the IEEE.
