Objectives

Anesthesiology, as a result of the diversity and complexity of its skills, is a central medical specialty in the management of urgent and emergent patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences in the clinical approach of urgent and emergent patients, within the scope of anesthesiology.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the internship, after following the activities of the anesthesiologists assigned to the Emergency Service, the student should understand the particularities and complexity of the perioperative approach to patients proposed for urgent and emergency procedures.

In the context of emergency, involvement in:

  • anesthesia for emergent procedures in the operating room and outside of the operating room;
  • labor analgesia;
  • perioperative medicine.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Supervised clinical internship in the Anesthesia Service, including the students’ rotation through the Operating Room of the Emergency Service, the locations where urgent complementary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed, and the Obstetric Emergency at the São João University Hospital Center (CHUSJ).

At the end of the internship, each student must present a clinical case, observed during the internship, in a session scheduled for this purpose. The presentation of the clinical case should focus on the preoperative evaluation, intraoperative approach, and postoperative care planning.
