Objectives
Understand the main concepts of health policies and health systems, namely regarding its organization, design and potential impact in the populations' health and in the health of its subgroups.
Learning outcomes and competences
By the end of this course, the students must:
- Know the main health problems, health determinants and the role of health policies and health systems on their control;
- Understand the health policy processes, namely regarding their formulation, implementation and evaluation;
- Understand the principles of health administration, namely regarding organization, financing, quality and equity;
- Integrate basic epidemiology, economics and sociology concepts for a better comprehension of the role and potential impact of health policies and health systems.

- Development, implementation and analysis of health policies;
- Health governance. Public participation and social mobilization. Health advocacy;
- Health administration principles: organization, financing, quality and equity.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Exposure to theoretical concepts coupled with the discussion of case studies. The analysis of health policies and healthcare administration intervention options will be stimulated through in-class and group discussions. Application of the knowledge acquired in a project-based learning strategy (group and individual work). promotion of the students' critical analysis and comunication skills.
