Objectives
To implement a research project with high scientific quality and with scientific input to the area.
- To define a problem and operational issues in research, namely the critique analysis of results.
- To develop state of the art of a problem in research.
- To detect ethical dilemmas implicit in a research project and deal with them accordingly with national and international regulations, possibly prior hearing of the ethics commission.
- To acquire skills for managing a research project: sequencing and operation of tasks, risks, contingencies and enhanced communication between stakeholders in a project.
- To apply advanced methods of qualitative or quantitative assessment.
- To apply methodological reasoning with proper interpretation of its operational limitations and epistemological as well as its meaning.
- To be aware of the technical formulations for the structure of a scientific text.
•To present findings/conclusions in oral or written communications.
Learning outcomes and competences
Only by carrying out a research work, students can acquire the skills and capabilities to perform fundamental research in Forensic Sciences. This curricular unit aims to elaborate a PhD Thesis that each student must to present at the end of the Cycle of Studies. The theme to be develop is a personal choice, but always focusing on forensic sciences. Accordingly to the Regulation of the Cycle of Studies (article 14.º), research work will be supervised by a professor or an UP PhD researcher in the scientific area of the Study Cycle or national or foreign doctor or merit expert in the scientific area of research recognized by the competent body of the organic unity, heard the scientific commission.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The development of effective research skills, depend largely on the immersion of the student in developing a research design, able to answer a specific question. The problems that arise from the implementation of the research design, selection of methods of analysis, as well as the interpretation of results and the ability to draw conclusions are skills that can only come from supervised research. The PhD involves direct contact with the supervisor ensured through weekly meetings tutorial nature. At these meetings the supervisor will directly transmit their knowledge on the subject to the student and will guide him through the experimental work. This course is based on the tutorial contact continued to convey to the student thorough knowledge of the subject matter in the field of forensic science.
