Objectives

To gain knowledge and develop skills in methods and dietary determinants relevant for public health.

To develop students' skills for the development of intervention community strategies in Nutrition.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course the student should be able: a) to characterize the methods of assessing nutritional status of populations and be able to select the best method to address the study objective; b) to know the determinants of dietary intake and to describe the food/nutritional context and the major public health problems and their implications in health indicators; c) to know specific aspects related with food/nutrition and the methodology used to evaluate them in different periods of life; d) to understand the concepts of Health Education and Health Promotion.

History, concepts and principles: Health and Public Health, evolution and relation with Nutrition. Nutritional Epidemiology: type of studies in nutritional epidemiology, methods of assessment of nutritional status and dietary intake. Determinants of food consumption. Diet in different periods of life (pregnant women, children, adolescents). Diet, Health and Disease: Food-borne Diseases, Diet and Chronic Diseases. Community Nutrition: Dietary situation in Portugal, Nutrition Education, Planning and Programming in Community Nutrition.
