Resumo (PT):
Abstract (EN): Cities have always been places of encounter of residents with the occasional habitant, the visitor. But, with massification of urban tourism and the increasing fluidity of short-term migration (for work, education or leisure), the floating population is increasing every year in more places, and gaining economic (and social) relevance. If cities have always been places of change, and change is permanent, it’s necessary to pay attention to some of its unwelcomed effects, as it is the case those that are related with the intensity of the change and the social segregation with an exclusion of the central location for the residence of longtime residents or long-time retailers. Analyzing the general dynamic and evidence from the city of Porto (North of Portugal), we believe that a harmonious balance between the needs of traditional residents and the demands of the burgeoning tourist, student, and digital nomad is crucial for sustaining identity.
