Graduated in Medicine in 1996 from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), marking the beginning of an appreciable academic career that continued with her PhD in Neurosciences from FMUP, which she completed in 2019. She became an invited assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) in 2020 in the Department of Surgery and Physiology, having been a University Assistant between 2005 and 2019 at Fernando Pessoa University (Porto, Portugal) and between 2010 and 2019 at FMUP.

In addition to her academic career, Margarida Barbosa has been an anesthesiologist at the São João Local Health Unit (ULS São João) since 2004. Pain Medicine has been an area of great professional dedication, proving her proficiency in 2015 with certificates of competence from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) and the Universitatsklinikum Der RuhR-Universitat Bochum (Germany), where she obtained certification in Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST).

Main research interests cover neuropathic pain, screening and symptom measurement tools for neuropathic pain, and diabetes and its ramifications.
