Objectives








Learning outcomes of the curricular unit: Main objective: To acquire the theoretical and clinical practice skills on the impact of lifestyle changes in the pathogenesis of civilization diseases.


Specific objectives: Identify the mechanisms associated with lifestyles (nutrition and physical inactivity) underlying the endocrine-metabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome (obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension ... ) and cancer. To develop skills in the collection, recording and reporting of clinical information (medical history and physical examination) of the metabolic syndrome (and its components), physical activity and food intake and body composition assessment. To use the information obtained to prepare a list of problems and propose the research to differentiate the main diagnoses and resolve persistent doubts by rational use of complementary diagnostic tools (diagnostic strategy). Acquire a core of theoretical knowledge that allows the resolution of the most common conditions associated with lifestyle changes with impact on civilization diseases (resolution of clinical problems). Building a therapeutic strategy using all available means, from the non-pharmacological, such as life style changes (diet and physical exercise), to drugs, surgery and other means of complementary therapy, and be enable to look for information to make decisions either in prevention or treatment.

Demonstration of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit’s intended learning outcomes.


The course contents were designed to allow the student to progress in the acquisition of knowledge, skills and understanding to be able to evaluate, a proposed diagnostic, therapeutic and define a strategy involving the various options available. The various diseases and conditions were included in this plan.

Syllabus:


Lectures (1 hour):


1. Sedentary lifestyle and metabolic syndrome (obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, etc.)

2. Western diet and metabolic syndrome.
3. Food and Cancer.
4. Dietary influences on the components of the metabolic syndrome.
5. Assessment of physical activity. Influence of physical exercise on the components of metabolic syndrome.

Theoretical and practical classes (1 hour):


 1.Evaluation of Body Composition (skinfolds, BIA, densitometry, CT and MRI, etc. and nutritional status.
2. Obesity and PCOS - role of dietary intervention and role of exercise.
3. Obesity and non-alcoholic liver disease.
4. Obesity, metabolic syndrome and bone alterations (arthrosis and other mechanical alterations).
5. Cancer and food.
6. Obesity, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease.
7. Assessment of food intake.
8. How to prescribe a food plan in a patient with metabolic syndrome? How to prescribe physical exercise in a patient with metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and obesity.


Practical Classes:


3.0 hours - Nutrition Consultation - diabetes, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia


3.0 hours - Participation in sessions of different types of activity / exercise to "treat" metabolic syndrome.
