Apresentação Pessoal

I was born in Matosinhos in 1957, but my father, who was from Trás-os-Montes, registered me in Vila Flor.

I studied at the Bom Pastor Seminary in Ermesinde between 1968 and 1973 (formerly 1st-5th years).
I did the former 6th and 7th years at Liceu de Matosinhos (currently called Augusto Gomes).
In the years 1975-76 I did “civic service” teaching 4th grade classes for adults in S. Mamede de Infesta-Matosinhos.

Although my name is Rui Manuel Fontes Gonçalves, I have used the name Rui Fontes since I joined FMUP in 1976.

I entered the Faculty of Medicine of Porto in 1976-1977 and, because I failed the 4th year, I finished my degree in 1983. I completed my general internship as a clinician in 1984 and 1985.

I am married and I have a son who was born in February 1993 and his name is João Rui.

I was accepted as an intern assistant for the Physiological Chemistry curricular unit at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto in December 1985, at a time when the Physiological Chemistry regent was Professor José Barros.

In the 1987-88 academic year I was a student at the Faculty of Sciences of Porto (first year of the Biochemistry course).

I took the Pedagogical and Scientific Aptitude Tests (Glucose-6-phosphatase and Glycogenosis type I) in January 1991, becoming an assistant.

I spent part of my scientific career in Madrid, in the B-23 laboratory directed by Antonio and Maria Antonia Sillero at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University. I lived in Madrid between July 1993 and May 1998. There I did research work on theoretical aspects of enzyme kinetics, acyl-CoA synthetase and firefly luciferase. At the same time, I maintained teaching activities in Porto.

I defended my doctoral thesis on April 28, 2000, becoming an assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto.

From January 2001 to February 2008 I investigated firefly luciferase in the Chemistry department of the Faculty of Sciences of Porto. Professor Esteves da Silva, Hugo Fraga, Diogo Fernandes, Inês Maio, Daniela Maia and Filipe Peralta also participated in this work.

Since 9/2/2005 I have been an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Porto.

In the 2007/08 academic year I was the leader of the Biochemistry II curricular unit of the Integrated Masters in Medicine (MIMED-FMUP).

In the academic years of 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2011-2012 I was regent of the Biochemistry I curricular unit (MIMED-FMUP).

From the academic year 2001/02 until 2023 I taught at the Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences (FCNAUP).

From 2013 to 2021 I was regent of the Biochemistry III curricular unit at FCNAUP.

On August 1, 2024 I became retired but remain active because I applied for retired teacher status for the year 2024-2025.

As part of my retired teacher status, I have a project that aims to increase the academic success of PALOP and Timorese students.
