To ensure that students: (a) are able to use appropriate style & register to write articles & letters in English for relevant contexts; (b) have a greater understanding of grammar at text & extended discourse level; (c) be able to use grammatical structures effectively and appropriately; (d) have enhanced their reading/writing skills for academic, employment & real-world purposes; (e) have extended their vocabulary bank & acquired specific vocabulary re topical issues & themes; (f) be able to deploy such vocabulary efficaciously for appropriate contexts; (g) have studied various text types - e.g. academic and business articles, both in English & Portuguese, and have practised writing effectively in these genres; (h) be able to use various corpora sites effectively; (i) have honed study & self-access skills so as to take more responsibility for own learning; (j) be able to deduce & discuss effectively, from a study of texts, writer's intended purpose & meaning, effectiveness of grammatical structures used, overall efficacy of the text under scrutiny; (k) have expanded knowledge of the English speaking world e.g. socio-cultural knowledge, appreciation of cultural diversity, etc.; l) have gained experience of using SDL Trados.
Students by the end of the first semester will be used to working autonomously a a wide range of texts. They should be able to identify different registers and purposes, as well as being able to summarise texts.
(1) Themes; pertinent & contemporary topics + articles & texts related to these. The History & Development of English; Standard English; Global English; English as a Lingua Franca; Pronunciation; Received Pronunciation & other accents; British English; acceptability/non-acceptability; etc. (2) Grammar study: (an inductive/descriptive, rather than prescriptive, approach will be followed, closely parallel to text analysis/study & writing skills). (3) Skills work will concentrate primarily on READING (e.g. text analysis & comparison), and WRITING (via regular homework assignments & class work). (4) Speaking will include class discussions & oral contributions, with practice in delivering speeches & discoursing from notes. (5) Various forms of Listening will be practised - e.g. Listening for gist & extended meaning, for specific information; critical listening; listening to lectures & note-taking; interpreting fairly complex arguments etc. (6) Practice will be given in writing academic English.
