Objetivos

By the end of the semester students should be able to:
Show understanding of basic question forms and apply them in conversation;
Express opinion orally and in writing on a cultural topic in a group or class discussion;
Listen to and understand an interview or recorded text and respond accordingly;
Show general understanding of a newspaper article;
Understand written instructions;
Format paragraphs;
Write an informal letter;
Write a simple argumentative essay;
Write a narrative/descriptive essay;

In addition, we aim to:

Consolidate students’ knowledge of selected key components of English grammar;
Broaden students’ range of vocabulary on the themes of school and university life;
Develop students' study skills and ability to use reference materials, with a view to making them more independent learners;
Familiarise students with a variety of online resources;
Encourage students to take part in online forums as an integral part of their learning

Programa

• Themes: Education: Becoming A University Student and Family & Relationships

We will look at various aspects of education; previous school experience and the new life first-year students face as they begin their degree course. We will also look at some aspects of university life in other countries, and make a comparison. We hope to invite Erasmus students to talk about the Erasmus programme and about their home universities. We will focus on differences in family life between Portugal and various other countries, examine how societal changes have affected family life and look at matters of clan and kinship. Study skills deemed essential for students of this level will be included. We shall be using the Moodle Learning Platform as a means of collating materials and communicating with students.


•Speaking

Students will be encouraged to talk about their background, previous schooling and educational experience and to take part in group and class their present university experience discussion on topics related to prepare on relevant topics arguments for debates focusing give an oral presentation main themes on a topic connected with the

•Listening

Emphasis will be placed on:
listening for gist – identifying the main ideas in a talk
demonstrating an understanding of what students have heard (and/or watched) by answering oral and written questions;
recounting the contents of a talk / programme to other students;
distinguishing between spoken and written registers of English.

This skill will be developed using a variety of audio texts and videos of varying length and difficulty.

•Reading

Emphasis will be placed on:
reading for general meaning (skimming);
reading for specific meaning;
working out the meaning of unfamiliar lexical items through context and other means

Students will be expected to demonstrate in a variety of ways that they have fully understood the
texts read.

•Writing

Emphasis will be placed on:

Understanding what constitutes a paragraph;
Writing an organised personal profile;
Planning and writing an informal letter detailing some aspect of university life;
Expressing opinions on themes arising from texts and class discussions;
Formatting and writing a paragraph for an explanatory essay e.g. describing an aspect of education in Portugal;
Planning and writing a short narrative, relating a past event or experience;
Using discourse markers;


Students will be asked to create a file of all the written work produced during the semester.

•Grammar:

The course will focus on the following areas of language:

EnglishRevision of the tense system, with particular attention given to present perfect, narrative tenses and ways of expressing the future ; interrogatives; modals and the passive: this grammar will be taken from the first half of Oxford Practice Grammar


In addition, students will be expected to recognise and correct simple errors of grammar and spelling,
especially those arising from Portuguese interference.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

Lessons will be both practical and theoretical, with emphasis on student involvement. Students will be expected to take some degree of responsibility for their own learning. Classes will be taught in English.

Students are required to attend 75 % of classes and a record is kept of attendance, with exceptions according to FLUP regulations.

The final mark will be calculated based on components of assessment during the semester including a final Use Of English test (50%) which students must pass in order to pass the course.
