By the end of the second semester students should be able to do the following:
1. Keep up a conversation on personal experiences and events currently in the news
2. Make notes while someone is talking
3. Understand detailed instructions or advice
4. Consider writing styles of different countries
5. Write an article and/or report, based on a topical issue

1. Speaking: tutorial participation skills; further presentation skills and oral discourse markers.
2. Listening: listening for non-linguistic cues; telling the difference between fact and opinion.
3. Reading: text types; note taking from whole books; newspaper editorial; identifying bias, connotations and attempts to influence; becoming a critical reader.
4. Writing: paragraph formatting and development; topic sentences; writing a newspaper report

This will be divided into two parts: ORAL/AURAL evaluation (listening, speaking, tutorial group presentations on topics, storytelling, debates, dictation, oral exam on set books) and WRITTEN evaluation (reading comprehension, essay writing, use of English tests).
