Objectives

This subject will focus on issues associated to the History of Historiography, particularly the key protagonists and currents from the 16th century to our days.

Program

1. History of Historiography: a new status for an old subject?

2. The origins of "historical criticism" and modern erudition – a brief analysis: from Jean Mabillon to the French Revolution.

3. The Historiography of the Enlightenment: assumptions and impasses.

4. 19th-century perspectives.
4.1. The French Revolution, Liberalism(s) and Historiography.
4.2. Historiography and cultural movements: Romanticism, Positivism et alii.
4.3. Historiography and Nationalities: State Nation and State/Employer.
4.4. The "method" and the "methodical school(s)"

5. The 19th-century historiographic revolutions.
5.1. Marxism and Historiography.
5.2. The Annales: birth and evolution of a historiographic movement.
5.3. From the Annales to the «Nouvelle(s) Histoire(s)».

6. A brief overview of the late 20th-century Historiographies: modern trends and archaisms (or maybe not...).

7. Post-Modernity and Historiography.

8. The last 50 years of Portuguese Historiography.

Mark obtained in the final exam.
In continuous assessment, the final mark is based on the average sum of the mark obtained in the exam plus the combined marks of all 3 assessment tasks for Maria Fernanda Ferreira Santos’ classes, as mentioned above in ‘Evaluation Components’.
