Objectives
To establish the political framework of the period, as well as the aspects that influenced the social and religious context. Underline the differences between the concepts of Humanism and Renaissance. To improve students' understanding of the issues studied, taking into consideration the artistic career of architects and the formal study of their most representative works for each period.
Program
1. Architectural theory
Inspiration from the Classical Antiquity model. New formulations: order, column, arch, vault, ornamental elements.
2. Architects
Filippo Brunelleschi: the dome of the Cathedral of Florence, churches of St. Lawrence and of the Holy Spirit, the Pazzi Chapel.
Leon Battista Alberti: the importance of the "De Re Aedificatoria" agreement. New proposals. Interventions on the facade of the church of Santa Maria Novella, Church of Rimini, sepulchre of Rucellai and churches of St. Sebastian and St Andrew of Mantova.
Donato Bramante: changes in 16th-century architecture. Importance of the Papacy of Rome and the construction of the Basilica of St. Peter. Interventions of Bramante in Milan and Rome. Programme of St. Peter’s. Triumph of the central plant.
Peruzzi, Sangallo, Rafael: continuing and reformulating the initial project.
Michelangelo: resurgence of Bramante's initial plan. Construction of St. Peter's dome. Consecration of the Capitoline Square. The Laurenciana Library, beginnings of Mannerism in architecture.
