Objectives

To provide a general overview of the constitution and consolidation of the kingdom of Portugal, since the 9th century to the end of the Middle Ages, paying particular attention to the political and economic structures.

Program

Introduction: Portugal and its History.

1. Political foundation of Portugal (9th to 13th centuries).
1.1 From the domain of Portucale (868) to the arrival of Count Henry of Burgundy (c. 1096).
1.2 The “Condado Portucalense”.
1.3 D. Afonso Henriques: from Prince to King.
1.4 Progress and conclusion of the Portuguese Reconquest.

2. Social and economic structures (13th to 15th century).
2.1 Demography.
2.2 Social groups (clergy, nobility, people, foreigners and ethnic and religious minorities).
2.3 Land and sea productions.
2.4 Commercialization of products and small-scale manufacturing.

3. Crises and readjustments (14th and 15th centuries).
3.1 The path to royal centralization.
3.2 The Iberian Peninsular conjuncture.
3.3 The 14th-century general crisis and the complex political situation at the end of the century.
3.4 Political, economic and social restructurings during the first half of the 15th century.
