Objectives

- To acquaint students with Portuguese population dynamics and explanatory factors.
- Interpret regional differences with relation to demographic behaviour.
- Understand the relations between population and the process of development.
- Develop students’ capacity to interprete demographic phenomena, so that they develop their ability to select the most appropriate methods in new real situations.
- Develop the knowledge of methods and tools for the longitudinal and transversal analysis of population.
- To deepen students’ knowledge of graphic representation and population cartography.
- Promote population analysis in the context of socio-economic and physical planning.

THEORETICAL CLASSES

1- Evolution of the Portuguese population:
1.1 – Until the end of the “Ancièn Regime”;
1.2 – From the 19th to the 21st century;
1.3 - Prospective sceneries.
2 - Demographic Transition in Portugal:
2.1 - Mortality transition and the structures of the causes of death;
2.2 - Fecundity transition: socio–demographic implications;
3 - Migratory movements.
4 - Ageing: social, economic and cultural factors.
5 - Family structures.
6 - Socio-economic transformations of the Portuguese population.
7 - Urbanization process.

PRACTICAL CLASSES

1- Sources for the study of Portuguese population:
1.1 – Until the 19th century;
1.2 – From the 19th to the 21st century.

2 - Mortality:
2.1- Mortality levels and schedules;
2.2- Construction of life tables;
2.3- Causes of death.

3 - Fecundity:
3.1 - Transversal analysis;
3.2 - Longitudinal analysis.

4 – Marriage and divorce rates:
4.1 – Analysis instruments;
4.2 - Construction of marriage and divorce tables.

5 - Mobility and Migrations:
5.1 – Direct methods;
5.2 – Indirect methods.

6 - Social and cultural structures:
6.1 – Analysis instruments;
6.2 - Prospective approaches.

7 – The economic structure:
7.1 – Analysis instruments;
7.2 - Prospective approaches.

8 – Spatial distribution of population:
