Objectives

1) To develop participants’ linguistic competence and knowledge of English through a series of meaningful activities relating to their interests and life experiences.
2) To practise spoken English and help increase participants confidence in speaking through a series of dynamic activities in pairs, group work and whole class discussions.
3) To practise written English and give participants opportunities to develop their skills and confidence in writing, especially through assignments given for homework. as well in-class activities.
4) To practise listening to native-speaker English and develop competence in understanding general meaning and picking out specific details.
5) To practise reading English at Intermediate level and develop strategies for understanding global meaning and identifying specific information.
6) To develop participants’ range of vocabulary in a series of topics relating to their cultural interests and life experiences.
7) To develop participants’ awareness and knowledge of essential features of English grammar at Intermediate level.

Learning outcomes and competences

After attending this curricular unit, and considering the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe, namely the learning level descriptors for English B1, students will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; will be able to produce simple connected texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The methodologies adopted in this curricular unit are based on a communicative approach for English language teaching. They aim at the development of students’ speaking skills; however, the other linguistic skills (listening, reading and writing) will also be considered. The diverse class activities will allow students to understand and apply the topics discussed in class effectively and critically.
