Objectives
- Contribute to the acquisition of tools on the program of studies based on the study of documentary, visual and audio sources, their analysis and interpretation.
- Identify the main architectural forms and spatial solutions that contributed to the history, art and culture of the West in its diachrony.
- Understand the importance of the religious image in the history and culture of the West.
- Develop skills of analysis and interpretation of sacred spaces in the West.
- Identify musical genres and languages in time and space.
- Understanding the musical work as an expression of human thought in time and space.
Learning outcomes and competences
The student must be able to identify and understand the relationship between sacred spaces and devotional practices, which include various artistic forms, such as imagery and music. It is intended to identify architectural forms and spatial solutions, iconographies, musical languages and instruments, situating them in space and time.

1. Paleo-Christian and Byzantine Arts 1.1 Religious architecture: plants, materials and constructive elements.
1.2 Images: Paleo-Christian moral painting and Byzantine mosaic.
1.3 The iconoclastic crisis.
2. Music and Christianity 2.1 Plainchant traditions: Syriac Chant; the Greco-Byzantine Chant; Ambrosian Chant; Gallican Chant; Mozarabic chant.
2.2 Gregorian Chant.
3. The Art of the Middle Ages: from Romanesque to Gothic. 3.1 Religious Architecture: Monastic and cathedral forms and models.
3.2 Architectural, devotional and funerary sculpture.
3.3 Polyphony: from the origins to the 13th century.
3.4 Architecture, sacred space and music.
4. Renaissance Art: 4.1 The importance of the classical model.
4.2 Architects, works and treaties.
4.3 Renaissance painting and sculpture: themes, forms, techniques and artists.
4.4 Renaissance music:
4.4.1 Geographies: Burgundy; Italy; England; Spain and Portugal.
4.4.2 Sacred genres: the mass and the motet.
4.4.3 Five generations of Renaissance composers.
5. Music in the Protestant Reformation and Counter-Reformation.6. The Baroque 6.1 Baroque Architecture: Dynamics and transformation of spaces.
6.2 Creation of a scenic space: music, liturgy and artistic forms. Painting, sculpture, carving and goldsmith.
