Objectives

1. To identify and define elementary notions of strategy and geopolitics
2. To identify and analyse the origins of geopolitical and geostrategic thought
3. To identify, distinguish and analyse different doctrines and theories of classical geopolitics, as well as the main criticisms to them
4. To identity and analyse the main elements of the new geopolitics
5. To identify and critically assess the contribution of critical geopolitics to the study of international phenomena
6. To understand the geopolitical thought in Portugal and reflect on the major issues of national relevance from the perspective of geopolitics and geostrategy.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Acquire basic knowledge about the theory and practice of geopolitics and geostrategy;
- Identify trends across geopolitics and geostrategy in most states and regions;
- Critically evaluate historical thinking, classical theories, and proposals from the 'new geopolitics' for geopolitics and geostrategy today;
- Understand and explain the importance of geopolitics and geostrategy, and apply the knowledge gained to the study of international politics and international relations.

Teaching methods and learning activities

- Most sessions are interactive theoretical-practical classes, which aim to familiarize the students with basic notions about each of the program's topics. In these sessions, student participation will be promoted through the discussion of texts previously distributed by the teacher;
- Tutorial guidance classes, where students should discuss and develop the preparation of a critical review that is relevant in the thematic scope of the course.
