This second semester of Didactics of English Language Teaching deals specifically with the classroom context.
Main aims:
a) To relate the theoretical background of key elements of E.L.T to their practical application in the classroom;
b) To exemplify the practical application of stated course components through the development of pedagogic frameworks;
c) To develop coherent strategies in relation to the planning and delivery of English language classes;
d) To encourage students to critically reflect on all procedures associated with successful classroom management.

a) Development of students’ capacity to reflect on: becoming a teacher; teaching and teaching contexts; the theory and practice of English language teaching (ELT);
b) Development of students’ knowledge of the principles and practice of English language teaching:;
c) Development of students’ ability to relate the theoretical background of these key elements to their practical application in the classroom;
d) Development of students’ intellectual and practical skills related to the analysis and construction of coherent lesson plans.
This is the second in a two-part programme (See Methodology of English Language Teaching I) which focuses on the principles and practice of English language teaching.
The syllabus focuses on the theory and practice of the following:
a) Becoming a teacher (exploring beliefs and values), teaching and teaching contexts;
b) Lesson planning (Metaphors; Student needs; Teacher decision-making; Approaches; Means of presentation; Key constituents; Analysis and Production);
c) Grammar (Types; Attitudes towards; Approaches to teaching; Pedagogic frameworks);
d) Vocabulary;
e) Teaching phonology: individual sounds, word stress, sentence stress, connected speech, intonation.
f) Language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening;
g) Thinking skills and scaffolding learning (Types of thinking – lower and higher order skills);
h) Use of technology in English language teaching;

The course combines theoretical lectures on all key syllabus areas using individual and group tasks and private study. Active participation and reflection is expected of students. Course assessment is continual with no final exam. Evaluated components consist of: seen and unseen written tests on the theory of ELT; practical coursework (construction of lesson plans which include a theoretical rationale and teaching materials); reflective journal writing on students’ initial beliefs and developing ideas about teaching and becoming a teacher. The Moodle platform is used to disseminate course information, consolidate and supplement class materials, and encourage discussion in forums. The medium of instruction of the course and assessment procedures are in English.

RESITS. Students who fail the course may only repeat ONE of the written exams. To do so, they must inform the teacher in writing (email), specifying which of the exams wish to repeat.

Students with special status, namely those covered by the status of Association Manager, Student Athlete, Student Firefighter, Military Student, National Team Athlete, Top-level Sportsperson or Student Worker, will not be obliged to attend classes, but must complete all the continuous assessment components on the set dates. In the event that a student needs to be absent on a set date, an alternative date will be arranged.
Students who wish to improve their final mark may only repeat ONE written test. Students must inform their teacher in writing (via email) which test they wish to repeat. Students must also be properly enrolled for ‘melhoria’ with the ‘Serviços Académicos’ so that their names are included in the marks list on Sigarra.
