Objectives

German A1.1 is designed for learners of German as a foreign language with no previous knowledge of this language. It is intended that students achieve a grade for the A1.1 level (basic user) of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in all skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Through the work with the manual, containing a diverse range of tasks and exercises designed to develop the skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and the lexicon in a systematic and progressive way, students consolidate and deepen their knowledge and linguistic capabilities set the CEFR for this level of study of the German language - essential tools to master various communicative situations that occur in everyday life. In addition, students are faced with the culture / reality of German-speaking countries by reading short texts and by watching / hearing audiovisual materials. Their grammatical knowledge is acquired through further study of textual phenomena in context (syntax, conjugation of verbs, verbs with separable particle verb tenses, declination of adjectives, pronouns, negation) which also contributes to broadening the range of comprehension strategies. The study of the German language in the A1.1 level is enhanced by extra learning materials found on the Moodle Platform. This method of learning (b -learning ) contributes to increase the autonomy of students.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester students should be able to: extend their declarative knowledge (knowing) and competence of assets (know-how); understand and use the vocabulary and structures related to the topics addressed both orally and in writing; master the terminology and appropriate use of grammatical structures provided for this level, acquire new skills and learning strategies / study skills, develop their interest in different cultures and realities; extend their skills to the level of the use of multimedia resources.

Program

In the German language classes A1.1 topics related to situations that occur in everyday life, eg. countries, languages, meetings, calendar, professions, shopping (supermarket), food and drinks, home, family, sports and leisure. These themes will be worked with all skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing). Several grammatical aspects will be the subject of reflection, analysis and practical exercises: 1. The sentence: declarative, negative, interrogative; distribution of elements in the sentence. 2 . The verb: verb tenses: present, past; modal verbs; to be and to have in the past. 3. The article: definite and indefinite articles (nominative and accusative). 4. The pronoun: personal pronouns, possessive pronouns (nominative and accusative). 5. The noun: gender and number of nouns. 6. Synthatical structures (introduction): complements of  nominative and acusative. 7. Connectors. 8. Pronunciation and spelling.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical sessions; various teaching strategies, group work or individual work, there is great emphasis on active participation by students. The mode of assessment implies an active and continuous participation by the student: doing homework, preparing the reading aloud of a text, sitting exams; delivering small work presentations using powerpoint.

Eligibility for exams

In order to pass the class, the student must achieve at least ten points in the weighted average of the written and oral component on a scale of 0-20 points. The written component includes a test (40%) and a final exam (60%). The approval implies that the weighted average of both tests results in a positive average. The students must attend 75% of all classes in order to qualify for formal assessment, except in the cases provided by law.

Calculation formula of final grade

Written evaluation, which consists of 1 test and a final exam - 70%. Oral assessment - 30%.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special status, namely those covered by the status of Association Manager, Student Athlete, Student Firefighter, Military Student, National Team Athlete, High Performance Sports Practitioner or Student Worker" (Article 14, point 1 of the Assessment Regulations), with regard to the participation component, cannot ensure face-to-face participation, but must ensure their regular participation in the tasks proposed on the Moodle platform. The 2 written exams (test + final exam) and the oral exam are mandatory.

Classification improvement

In this UC, only the component final exam is subject to improvement ("recurso" or "melhoria"). Students who want to improve the final exam ("melhoria") must enroll in advance in their Academic Management Services.

Observations

The lessons will start in Portuguese and will tend to German.
