Objectives
This unit aims to support students in their development of a consistent doctoral research plan in all its stages - from bibliographic data collection to a deepening familiarity with critical tools that will frame and sustain the process of preparing their theses. Together with 'Thesis Project II (Projeto de Tese II), this unit will stimulate those competences that will enable students to enjoy a growing research autonomy.
Students are expected to acquire the following competences: the ability to conduct autonomous research and develop a project for scientific research of their own device; the ability to engage in critical discussions with their supervisors; awareness of the state of the art in their area of academic specialization.

Familiarity with specialised bibliography and with conceptual and methological tools that will support students in the process of preparing their doctoral theses..

Program
Contents will be defined according to the different projects that are to be developed by the students individually, but always considered in the broader framework of this doctoral programme. In the tutorial sessions, students will define with their supervisors a research plan for the Thesis they are expected to put into practice over the second and third years of the PhD program, and which will culminate in the presentation of their theses at the end of the 3rd year.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The methodologies to be adopted are characteristic of research seminars in the field of the Humanities, and include debates within the scientific range of this Programme. The methodologies to be favoured will be those required by the specific nature of the students’ projects.
