Objectives


  1. Understand and critically analyse the architectonic object in the historical, geocultural and sociocultural environments.

  2. Study the articulation between the architectonic program with its function, the order and the production.

  3. Study the portuguese arquitecture and the international diffusion of shapes, models and artists.

  4. Analyse the architectonic objecy and the author/artist program.

  5. Study and analyse diachronicly the typological diversity of portugues architecture, emphasizing the religious, civil and military architecture.

  6. Analyse the tradition and the architectonic programs renovation developed in Portugal between the 15th and the 18th centuries.

  7. Study the specific solutions of religious and civil architecture produced in Portgual.

Learning outcomes and competences

To know how to identify and apply the operating concepts of historiography of art in Portuguese architecture: Medieval Renaissance, Mannerism, Classicism, Baroque, Late-Baroque and Neo-classicism.

To know the new social and professional status of the architect and the military engineer.

To analyse treatises as a source for studying Portuguese and European architecture of the 15th to 18th centuries.

To understand the relations between commissioner, artist, and architectural programme.

To identify and classify the types of Portuguese architecture of the modern era.

To discover the work of major artists.

To comprehend and understand the concept of centres and peripheries in the geocultural and artistic context.

1. Modernity tradition in architecture


2. Architectural culture in Portugal between the 16th and 18th centuries: the artist, treatises, and conciliar law.


3. Commissioning mechanisms: public, private, civil, and religious.


4. Religious architecture forms, programmes and artists in Portugal: cathedrals, monasteries, colleges, churches and secular orders. Commissioners, artists and works.


5. Architectures of Power: royal residence, palace, noble house and pleasure villa. Commissioners, artists and works.


6. Military architecture: modern defence systems in Portugal, equipment and urban organisation.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The exposure of programmatic contents in class is supported by the presentation of audiovisual material, the analysis of primary and secondary sources and the presentation of case studies in the classroom context (WT) and in field work (TC) - approaches that aim to consolidate the acquired knowledge and promote critical exercise. OT sessions are for the monitoring of practical work and the deepening of program contents.

This course works with distributed evaluation without final exam. The evaluation is based on the realization of an individual research project (60%), elaboration of reading notes and oral presentation of the developed work (40%). For students with special status shall apply the regulation and legislation.

Under the MHAPCV, is encouraged students to submit papers to scientific journals with referees, as well as the participation and organization of scientific meetings. If articles resulting from the research carried out in the context of this UC, which are subject to monitoring by the teacher (s), are submitted, students must inform the submission of the article to their teachers. In addition, we ask you to indicate (in a footnote and / or during the communication) that the study was carried out in the context of this UC, within the scope of the Master in Art History, Heritage and Visual Culture of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Porto and in the present academic year.
