Objectives

Throughout the semester, students will:

  • acquire the basics of translatory competence in order to translate from the source language (LP) into the target language (LC);

  • perfect their command of the LC (German) in terms of grammar, lexicon, particularly collocations, syntax and phraseology;

  • familiarise themselves with specific language in both LP and LC, depending on the texts to be translated;

  • apply an analysis model to the texts to be translated (including sender, receiver, medium of publication, purposes and functions of the LP text; sender, receiver, medium of publication, purposes and functions of the LC text);

  • learn to see translation as a process of searching for problem-solving strategies;

  • simulate teamwork by sharing tasks;

  • apply an analysis scheme, looking at the translation situation (communicative situation, sender, receiver, purpose), in order to recognise and reproduce, in the CL, certain characteristics of the texts to be translated;

  • select and/or adapt a translatory problem-solving strategy;

  • learn to use translator's tools correctly and efficiently (e.g. databases, corpora, automatic translators, monolingual and bilingual dictionaries available online or in print, technical and idiomatic dictionaries);

  • familiarise yourself with Internet resources such as corpora, databases, parallel texts, especially in the target language;

  • prepare a translation of a text or text excerpt each week, discussing translation problems with classmates;

  • hand in a printed translation every week, which will be corrected and annotated by the teacher, and hand in a second corrected version of the same translation at a later stage;

  • proofread translations made by automatic translators and learn their potential as well as their limitations;

  • work in groups, commenting on the problems encountered and the solution strategies adopted to solve the translation problems.

Learning outcomes and competences


  • Students will have acquired the necessary skills to follow correct translation strategies and use in an apropriate way the translation tools in order to translate texts in general language from Portuguese into German.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

In order to participate in this UC successfully, students must master the contents provided at A2 level and B1.1 level (Grundwortschatz und Grundgrammatik).

Program

In this course will be simulated situations the future translator will encounter in the exercise of his profession. The selection of texts for translation intends to reflect the diversity of texts that can be targeted in a translation order. Thus, different text types will be translated, such as newspaper articles, emails, catalogs, business letter, texts available on websites and instruction manuals. Students will analyze the source texts and, individually or in groups, translate them and then discuss their translational options and comment on them. They will present a translation performed individually, commenting on the steps of the translation process, presenting their difficulties as well as the solutions they found and justifying their choices. During the course, they will consult monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, for general and technical language. Research techniques will be applied, particularly in terms of technical databases, corpora and parallel texts on the internet.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Practical classes; various didactic strategies; group and individual work, independent work by the student using materials suggested by the lecturer, library and internet research. Classes will emphasise students’ active participation.
