Objectives
- Develop knowledge regarding development theories.
- Deepen information regarding political development agendas at the international level.
- Deepen knowledge of geographic interpretation at different geographic scales within the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) scope and smart specialization.
Learning outcomes and competences
1. To understand the subjective character of the concept of development and to know how to differentiate it from growth.
2. To identify the different dimensions of development the way each of them concurs to the progress of a certain space, and the well being and quality of life of its inhabitants.
3. To know the main theories of development and the relevance of the sustainability principles.
4. To understand how the abstract dimensions are related with policies and practical aspects of eveyday life.
5. To recognize the role of public policies, planning and correspondent ations in sustainable development.
6. To identify and valorise the territorial governance dimensions in the promotion of general development.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical-practical classes with expositive components and debate.
Presentation and debate, on public policies, plans and development actions, including conferences, round tables and visits, with the participation of development agents, such as political decisors and dirigents of national, regional and local institutions.

Calculation formula of final grade
Evaluation along the semester, without an exam: test (40%); practical work (40%), individual reports related with conferences, round-tables, and other activities (20%).

Os estudantes devem fazer:
1) um trabalho de grupo à escala nacional, implicando a recolha e tratamento de informação, redação de um relatório e a apresentação oral do mesmo (50% da avaliação). Este trabalho deve ser desenvolvido com acompanhamento do corpo docente.
2) Em termos de avaliação individual, será realizadaa uma prova escrita (50% da avaliação).
