Objectives

To support students in the elaboration of a PhD project in Linguistics, one of the variants of Language Sciences.

Learning outcomes and competences

This curricular unit has as main goal to support students as for the establishment of a research plan in order to write their PhD dissertation.

Students are expected to acquire the following competencies:

-the ability to conduct autonomous research and to develop a project for an original scientific research;

- the ability to engage in critical discussions with their supervisors;

- to obtain the awareness of the state of the art in the area of specialization;

- the capacity of prevision of all the stages of the research to be done, from the collection of bibliographical data to the familiarisation with relevant critical tools and to the writing of the PhD thesis.

There is no syllabus, because everything will be defined according to the different projects that are to be individually developed by the students, in the broader framework of the four branches of this PhD program.

In the tutorial sessions, students will define with their supervisors a research plan for the thesis they are expected to put into practice over the second and third years of the PhD program, and which will culminate in the presentation of the thesis at the end of the 3rd year.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The methodologies to be adopted are characteristic of research seminars in the area of Language Sciences, in each one of the four branches of the course.

Students will be evaluated on the basis of their active participation and their regular contributions to the sessions.
