Objectives

The Curricular Unit of Contemporary World History seeks to understand the main lines of the political history of the 20th century, from the First World War to the end of the cold war and the bipolar world.

 

  1. Critically analyze the main events in the history of the 20th century.
  2. Define and debate fundamental contemporary concepts and issues, considering their complexity and correlation.
  3. Demonstrate the need for an interdisciplinary analysis of the main world regions.
  4. Critically problematize the ongoing evolutionary trends in the world political order

 

Learning outcomes and competences


  1. Acquire knowledge about the history of the 20th century.


  2. Understand the relationship of historical processes, critically observing continuities and discontinuities in multiple contexts and conjunctures.




  3. Acquire interpretive and analytical skills on world events and trends throughout the 20th century.




  4. Mobilize previously acquired knowledge to understand the present time.

Part 1 - Total Wars: the two world wars and political confrontations in the first half of the 20th century

  1. Imperialism(s) and colonialism: European domination.
  2. Total wars: the two world wars.
  3. The Russian Revolution and its global impact.
  4. The crisis of the liberal model, the rise of fascism and totalitarian phenomena.

 Part 2 – The bipolar world and the end of European imperialism

  1. The Cold War and the emergence of the bipolar world: the blocs in confrontation.
  2. The crisis of European supremacy: anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism and decolonization and the end of European supremacy.
  3. From the «glorious thirty» (1945-73) to the dismantling of the Welfare State in capitalist economies.
  4. European construction: project and identity
  5. «Real socialism» and the fall of the Berlin Wall: Sino-Soviet split, Perestroika and the end of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union.

 Part 3 - Crises and challenges in the 21st century.

  1. The emergence of a neonationalism and the challenges of Populism to democracies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The Theoretical-Practical (TP) classes will combine the exposition/exploration/debate of the syllabus contents, with the support of texts, graphic, statistical, or other material, promoting, whenever possible, the participation of students in the critical discussion of the questions presented. The Tutorial Orientation (OT) sessions will focus, fundamentally, on the orientation of the individual work of the students and on the participation of the students in debates guided and developed from previous reading of documentary sources and/or bibliographical excerpts.

Eligibility for exams

Approval in this module requires:

(i) to attend (either online or in face-to-face classes) to 75% of the ldctures, both Theory-practical and Tutorials.

(ii) a minimal mark of 10 (ten) out of 20 at the final written exam.

Final grade = the sum of grades obtained in two of the three questions presented, each questions having a maximum score of 10.
