Objectives

To convey notions on the principles of both cartography and the cartographical projections, in addition to the systems of geographical reference. To improve the student’s capabilities for reading and practical handling and use of the various topographical maps in order to fulfil the current needs of archaeological practice. To approach the instruments of cartographical manipulation and their use in archaeological research. To know the basic procedures in topography for its use within the archaeological practice.

Learning outcomes and competences

To understand the processes for reading and manipulating of both the cartographic and topographic data, in order to be able to coordinate and use specialized resources.

Easiness on the use of the data for analysis, recording and representation in cartographic layouts on their diverse forms, and their use on the various tasks of the archaeological practice.

  1. Introduction: Brief history of cartography.

  2. Elementary notions of cartography. The typology of maps and charts.

  3. Systems of map projections, the datum, the coordinates and geo-referencing.

  4. Cartograpgy applied to Archaeology. Military and geological maps: reading the territory.

  5. Basic principles of topography and the measuring instruments.

  6. Topography applied to archaeological excavation.

  7. Topographical representation of archaeological sites.

  8. Cartography and geographical information systems.

  9. Analysis of cartographical photo-representations.

  10. Digital terrain modelling.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures with resource to image media, based on the presentation of the programme topics. In addition, practical exercises and simulations will be made as to illustrate regular situations of the archaeological practice.

Eligibility for exams

Minimum attendance to 75% of total classes, with exceptions supported by both the Law and Faculty regulations.

Average of class attendance and participation (35%) with individual, or group, essay (65%), as established by the lecturer in the beginning of term.

Failure to comply with minimum attendance may require an oral presentation and discussion of the essay, in addition to a written test. Attention to the above situation will be called by the lecturer before the end of term.
