Objectives

• To develop students’ ability to read and interpret written historical sources of medieval and modern times;
• To enable students to scientifically transcribe original texts of different types and to prepare their briefs;
• To provide students with theoretical knowledge to enable them to examine the internal and the external features of the documents;
• To enable students to answer specific questions stemming from research practice with primary sources, including identifying writing agents and sites, the time period when the acts were carried out, the purpose of the different texts, etc.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should be able to transcribe different juridical documents written in different scripts, as well as to analyse  the features considered indispensable for the interpretation of various historical written sources.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

It is recommended that students have had some contact with paleographic practices.

Classification improvement

The improvement of classification may be obtained in an appeal season, through the completion of a single exam that encompasses all the subjects taught. There is no appeal from any specific test.

Observations

Since it is a discipline with post-graduation level, it is recommended that the Students have basic knowledge of Paleography.
