Objectives

This seminar aims at promoting the students’ reflection on central issues of literary theory and criticism.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students are supposed to aquire the required knowledge of lectured subjects within the scope of the assigned syllabus; moreover, they are also due to develop analytical as well as criticical skills by means of a full recognition of both methodological and metalinguistic tools, in order to implement a contrastive approach of given theoretical texts. They are expected to develop their critical thought and synthetic expression by means of a widely sustained argumentation and debate of ideas throughout. Eventually, and in the light of contemporary critical thought, students are expected to assimilate a wide conceptual background, historically grounded, so as to enable and thefore encourage their reading and interpretation abilities.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Seminar sessions

Theoretical seminars include the lecturing of theoretical subject matters as referred to in the sylabus, and constitute de basis for the introduction of a choice of theoretical texts from the various periods and different authors, as long as they may figure as clear illustrations of the studied topics. The work on theoretical seminars is followed by tutorial work whereby students, both individually and in groups, are supposed to present in class a critical reading and analysis of theoretical texts previously assigned to them as home work, in order to promote, ideally, a "brainstorming" debate of ideas. All students are due to fulfill this requirement as it will stand as an evaluation item. Moreover, at the start of the semester, a list of possible topics for works is given to students, for them to choose as research theme and present it in seminar by the end of the semester. Evaluation is therefore distributed with no final exam.

Evaluation: distributed without final exam.
