Objectives

The syllabus aims:

-          to provide information in order to understand the evoution of world history (1914-2013)

-          to support the development of an analytical understanding on the trends and area studies of today's world, combining multidisciplinary approaches

-          to allow students a critical reading of the literature and media on world politics

 

Learning outcomes and competences

Theoretical lectures aim to provide that students are able to:
-increase historical and geographical knowledge on world history
- develop a conceptual and framework of world history and geopolitics.

1- Imperialist powers on the eve of the Wordl Wars

2- The World Wars

3– Political reorganisation of the powers: the end of colonial empires and the firs nuclear age (1945-1989)

II – Current Trends

1 – Trends of the world market (1980-2000)

2 – The “violent economy”: energy and natural resources

3 – Introduction to the main regional conflicts: Middle East; Central Ásia; Coreas; Sahel; Congo; Golfo of Guinea

Teaching methods and learning activities


Theoretical classes include:
- lecture sessions
- workshop practices whenever possible using primary sources

Tutorial session aim to test the student’s performance on the use of the provided information and methodology. It is expected that throughout their own research project, students can develop basic research using case studies based on media information
