Objectives

Mainly, this unit aims to: 

- Provide direct and close contact of students with national reality of museum quotidian, presenting it and discussing it from the point of view of its organization and management dimension, in an integrated and shared responsibility perspective;

 - Present, discuss and sensitize students to the importance of the museum legal framework in Portugal, taking into account their current or potential activity, as museum professionals;

 - Provide information on the structuring legal sources relating to the object of the course and provide students with the basic conceptual tools of law applied to the museum management;

 - Providing students the basics of planning and an integrated view of the processes of cultural management;

 - Increase knowledge on cultural planning and its relationship with the overall museum strategy.

Learning outcomes and competences

With this unit, it is expected that students acquire knowledge and skills to:

 - Analyze the legal framework of the activity of museum management;

 - Use concepts, methods and tools for cultural planning;

 - Improve personal skills for teamwork;

 - Explore the establishment of collaborative networks in order to create added value and identify potential partners;

 - Apply the methods and supporting project management tools;

 - Develop skills to coordinate multiple interdisciplinary tasks integrating different areas of project management

General bibliography will be complemented by specific literature regarding each program topic, to be indicated by the lecturer.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical classes, with lectures and discussions on different topics and using audiovisual aids and other material, as well as tutorial supervision of selected topics. Class debate will be highly encouraged an essential guarantee of participatory, reflective and critical learning. In addition, several guest lecturers will be invited to participate in different issues.
