Objectives

As part of the Master’s in Medieval Studies and History and Heritage, this course unit aims to provide students with a thorough grounding of the fundamental structures of Latin, which will serve as tools for a better understanding of Portuguese language structures, as well as for archive work and mainly for collecting contents from documents in Latin in view of correct identification and cataloguing

Learning outcomes and competences

- At the end of the semester, students must demonstrate mastery of grammatical and lexical structures studied by translating simple texts (Latin / Portuguese, Portuguese / Latin).

1. Preliminary considerations: - Latin in the context of the Indo-European languages. - Latin, the romance languages and the Portuguese. - Brief overview of the genesis of the Latin alphabet. - Latin pronunciation. - Cases and their functions. - Notions of root, theme, inflection and characteristic. 2. Reading, translation and grammatical, literary and cultural commentary of a selection of literary or notarized texts (according to students' interests), available in the form of anthology and organized according to the level of difficulty. 3. Grammar issues 3.1. Morphology 3.1.1. Nominal inflection: nouns, adjectives, pronouns and adverbs. 3.1.2. Verbal inflection: indicative mode: present, imperfect, future, past perfect and pluperfect (active and passive voice); imperative mode (present); conjunctive mode (present); nominal forms: infinitive, present participle, past participle and gerund. 3.2. Syntax 3.2.1. Subordination 3.2.2. Coordination 3.2.3. Subordinate clauses: relative; infinitive completive; circumstantial: temporal, causal, temporal-causal, comparative, concessive, conditional and final. Coordinate clauses: copulative, adversative, and disjunctive. 3.3. Main circumstantial complements and passive agent. 4. Applying grammar issues to translation exercises into Latin. 5. From Latin to Portuguese: the foundations of Portuguese language.

Eligibility for exams

In order to pass this course unit, students are required to attend 75% of the sessions (except in cases foreseen in the Assessment Regulations) and they must obtain a pass mark for the coursework they submit.
