- Skills development in reading the regional network - Apply techniques and methods of research in the field of transport and communications - Promote the role of critical transport and communications policies - Propose solutions to transportation problems
It is expected that at the end of this UC, the students are able to understand the structure of transport networks at different scales of analysis and their interactions with other geographical areas; distinguish concepts on mobility and transport; analyze territorial issues and outline possible solutions; develop a critical attitude, geographically sustained, for the observation and analysis of transport networks.
1. Transport and territory (2 weeks) Concepts, characteristics and modalities. Local intervention. Transportation equity. Policy making and networks management. 2. Methods of transport analysis (2 weeks) Space interaction. Distance, time and cost. Data acquisition. Roads capacity and density. Projects evaluation. 3. Network planning and traffic (3 weeks) Parking and trip generation. Road hierarchy and road intersections. Intermodality and interfaces. Network management. 4. Mobility and Accessibility (2 weeks) Definition. Mobility and accessibility indicators. Data representation and analysis. Results and applications - the promotion of opportunities, equality and territorial solidarity. 5. Transport planning and policies (3 weeks) Principles underlying the intervention. Evaluation and environment: priorities and lessons for the twenty-first century.
Specific references will be given to students during class.
Additionally to the work based on presentations, whose responsibility belongs to the teachers, extended discussions and opportunities to reflect –which areprovided by the act of reading that targets theoretical recon, literature revision and acquisition of concepts, notions, relationships and explicative schemes –, the core methodology of this CU is based on the construction of action challenging experiences, revealing opportunities to express, discuss in an oriented and reflect way. Students develop individual and group research guided by the teacher and construct encouraging challenges discussed in class and in social networking groups dedicated to the UC.
In theoretical classes students participation is stimulated and In practical classes centered on objectives of attendance basic skills acquisition that may occur inside or outside the classroom.
