Objectives


In this curricular unit students are introduced to topics related with the study of Greek Civilization. Students should know and identify the main accomplishments of this Civilization (political, social, economic and cultural), throughout the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods.

 

Learning outcomes and competences

 

Throughout the curricular unit the students should:

- know the different types of sources for the history of the Greek Civilization;

- understand its geographical and chronological framework;

- situate chronologically its main historical facts (political, economic and social);

- understand the different stages of formation of the Greek World;

- know and identify its main cultural accomplishments;

- identify the most significant aspects of the Greek Paideia;

 

This curricular unit is designed to prepare students to deal with the theoretical and historical contents (from the social, political, economic and cultural point of view) of the Greek Civilization. It was also thought to foster students' autonomous learning in the scope of the adopted Boulogne model of teaching -learning strategies. From de didactic point of view, this unit is divided into five modules, thoroughly explained in the syllabus, according to a diachronic perspective of the History of the Hellenic World in the classical antiquity (from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period).

Module I - The importance of the Classical Civilizations; Geographic framework;  Sources.

 

Module II - The formation of the Greek World; Polis and its characterizing elements.

 

Module III - The Archaic State; Colonization; The Athenian models as  a paradigm; Sparta; The Medo-Persian Wars.

 

Module IV - Pericles; Democracy; Peloponnesian War;

 

Module V- The decline of polis; Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Empire.
