This introductory class is designed to familiarize students with the theory and practice of interlingual subtitling as well as to help them acquire a general knowledge of other audiovisual translation practices such as dubbing, audiodescription and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Students who successfully complete this class will:
• be able to analyse multimedia texts and their semiotic systems;
• make accurate use of the metalanguage of audiovisual translation;
• be familiar with the professional subtitling process and its different phases;
• be able to locate and use the multiple resources available for subtitlers on the Internet;
• be familiar with the translation and technical skills needed to subtitle an audiovisual programme;
• produce adequate interlingual subtitles of an audiovisual programme on the basis of its purpose, type and audience;
• be able to make efficient use of free subtitling software as well as demo versions of industry standard subtitling software;
• be able to recognise and propose solutions for translation problems posed by specific cultural issues;
• be able to apply the conventions of good subtitling practices.

Excellent knowledge of the working languages and their cultures (Portuguese and English).
This introductory course is designed to provide students with an overview of multimedia products and their main constituent parts, to familiarize them with the main concepts and terminology in multimedia translation, and to guide them in the use of subtitling software. Presentations and class discussions will focus on topics such as:
• The semiotics of audiovisual texts.
• Audiovisual translation for TV, cinema and DVD: subtitling, dubbing, voice-over, simultaneous interpreting for TV;
• Surtitling for theatre/opera;
• Accessibility: transadaptation for the deaf and the hard-of-hearing; audiodescription for the visually impaired;
• The main functionalities of subtitling software;
• Translation problems and their possible solutions when subtitling various types of programmes (films, series, documentaries, etc.)
An extensive bibliography and a list of further selected readings will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
Classes include: short lectures on the theory of audiovisual translation followed by practical exercises and/or group and class discussions on the topics covered in the lectures; tutorial orientation sessions where students learn how to use software to subtitle videoclips. Tutorials are also an opportunity to discuss students’ group projects and receive guidance on particular aspects of the project, such as transcription of difficult passages, translation of humour, culture-bound expressions and taboo words, synchronization, bibliographical references, etc.

ATTENDANCE POLICY Students are expected to attend 75% of classes.
Assessment includes a group project and a summative test covering theoretical aspects and based on lectures and set readings, each worth 50% of the final mark.
