Objectives

The aim of this course is to help students develop a translatorial competence through practical exercises of translation of texts from different fields of knowledge and with different degrees of expertise.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should now be able to analyze different types of longer and more complex texts, paying particular attention to macro and microtextual levels (collocations, phraseology, terminology, structure, registration, etc..), select the most appropriate strategy for translation and find the best solutions at each textual level, so that the translated text can fulfill the requirements specified in the translation briefrespecting the communicative situation. Students should also be able to select the most adequate information sources within their research work. It is also very important that students identify the different steps of the translation process and that they stand for their choices and know how to justify them.

Continuing the work carried out in «Tradução Geral I», this course provides an opportunity for students to consolidate the translation activity.The selection of texts for translation seeks to reflect the diversity of areas of knowledge. The texts presented in class will be of various kinds and have in common the fact that they are documents addressed to a non-specialist audience (including children, young people, etc.). Information on test-drives, medical texts, texts on Translation Theory and Intercultural Studies are but a few examples of the thematic areas addressed. The practical translation exercises will serve as a starting point for the discussion of issues related to the more theoretical issues, such as translators’ skills, namely research skills.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The source texts are read and discussed in class to anticipate potential translation problems and are then translated individually or in groups of two students. This u. c. regularly benefits from the presence of mobility students, native German speakers and, whenever possible, the groups have a German speaking and a Portuguese speaking student, for the exchange of linguistic and cultural knowledge turns out to be profitable for both parties. The translation proposals are analyzed in two ways: based on the reading and evaluation of works that are sent by the students, the teacher lists and discusses the major mistakes found or the students are asked to present their proposals in class and to justify their choices and illustrate their research before the teacher and their peers. The assessment is continuous without final exam.
