Objectives

1) To familiarise students with the problem of “splendor /crisis / renovation” in the Political History, on the basis of Portuguese historiography related to the Middle Ages. 2) To familiarise students with specific concepts and basic methods, i.e. political society, prosopography, the Feudal State, the Modern State, etc. 3) To propose and justify a chronology for the main developments occurring in the time frame 1279-1521. 4) To provide students with adequate knowledge about the powers of the king, the secular church, municipalities, their relations and conflicts. 5) To familiarise students with the main resources in the History of the Powers during the periods studied.

Learning outcomes and competences

The programgiving a reading politological medieval Portuguese, allow
 the students to:

1)Acquisition by students of chronological frameworks essential for the periods considered

2) Full control of concepts historiographical 'Identification of a Country "(1096-1279) and' Genesis of the Modern State" (1279-1521).

3) Full control of the problems inherent to the plurality of political powers in the Middle Ages Portuguese.

1. Introduction: Na approach to the Middle Age through the History of the Powers.  2. «Definition of boundaries» (1096-1279...): creation and consolidation of a kingdom. 2.1. Geography and its consequences in historiography. 2.2. The (long) “dossier” of historiography of the creation of a kingdom. 2.3. Conjunctures: From the Condado de Portucale to the beginning of the Dionysus era.
3. Feudalism and the «genesis of the political modernity» (...1279-1521). 3.1. Power and powers in the Portuguese Middle Age. 3.2.1. The «multiple power». 3.2.2. The power of the king. 3.2.3. The secular church. 3.2.4. The non-religious aristocracy 3.2.5. The power of the municipalities. 3.2.6. The Court: a place of affronts / articulation of powers. 4. Conclusion: The second half of the XVI century: old powers and new problems?
