Objectives
In this curricular unit students are introduced to topics related with the study of Roman Civilization. Students should know and identify the main accomplishments of this Civilization.
The students must understand the following subjects:
- the different types of sources of Roman history, its value and limitations: literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources.
- the geographical and chronological framework of Roman civilization in its different phases: the Monarchy, the Republic; the Empire.
- situate chronologically the main events of Roman history.
- the institutional evolution of Roman society.
- the different stages of the Roman Empire and know their different motivations, with particular emphasis on the Republican and Empire period.
- the legacy of Roman civilization to Western European civilization.
Learning outcomes and competences
In this curricular unit students are introduced to topics related with the study of Roman Civilization. Students should know and identify the main accomplishments of this Civilization (political, social, economic and cultural), throughout the Monarchy, Republic and Imperial periods.
Throughout the curricular unit the students should:
- know the different types of sources for the history of the Roman Civilization;
- understand its geographical and chronological framework;
- situate chronologically its main historical facts (political, economic and social);
- understand the different stages of formation of the Roman World;
- know and identify its main cultural accomplishments.
This curricular unit is designed to prepare students to deal with the theoretical and historical contents (from the social, political, economic and cultural point of view) of the Roman Civilization. It was also thought to foster students' autonomous learning in the scope of the adopted Boulogne model of teaching -learning strategies. From de didactic point of view, this unit is divided into five modules, thoroughly explained in the syllabus, according to a diachronic perspective of the Roman History in the classical antiquity.

Module I - Introduction to Roman history: the evidence (literature and epigraphy; archaeology). The geography of Italy and its influence on the development of Rome. The foundation. The Rome monarchy;
Module I - The Roman Republic. The conquest of Italy and the plebeian struggle for equality and the government of Rome. Rome’s expansion in the Mediterranean.
Module I - The Late Republic and the Augustan Principate.
Module I - Early and late Roman Empire.
Module I - The legacy of the Roman Civilization.
