Objectives

  1. Understand the principles associated with the organization of research projects, through the identification of objectives, hypothesis formulation and structuring of the research;

  2. To know the basic scientific research methods and its applicability;

  3. To increase analytical skills, discussion and communication of research results;

  4. Develop an investigation project with relevant and valid geographical information, structured and documented using several languages and data sources;

  5. Review and carefully interpret the information, comparing it, raising hypothesis for its confirmation/ rejection, keeping a reflective and receptive attitude to new challenges.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester and based on the objectives of this UC, it is expected that students are able to:

  1. Design and organize a research project in Geography with relevant and valid geographical information, structured and documented using several languages and data source;

  2. Select the appropriate materials and scientific methods to implement the defined project;

  3. Apply appropriate strategies to the project development, selecting the analysis scale and the procedures of acquisition, processing and representation of information;

  4. Discuss and analyze problems, keeping a reflective attitude, in order to suggest and justify proposals for their resolution, supported by scientific concepts and methods;

  5. Demonstrate sensitivity to the geographical scope of issues, trying to reconcile and manage the potential of research process, always assuming a critical and receptive attitude to new challenges.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Aiming the development of an individual research project, we use methods focused on its accomplishment, also considering the type of UC (Seminar) and research themes. Each teacher is responsible for a number of students depending on their contact hours, and their distribution is carried out in accordance with the preferences for the themes proposed by professors. Thus, emphasis is on individualized orientation, although at specific moments take place joint sessions. Initial classes are intended for the project planning, gathering each teacher with his group of students to discuss common issues of their design, scheduling later more personalized sessions depending on the project of each student.
