Objectives

By the end of the semester students should be able to:

- Interpret main guidelines of the structures of Portugal in the nineteenth century;

- Relate events, timelines and circumstances;

- Interpret and contextualize authors and texts;

- Discuss interpretations and ways of approaching the Portuguese historiography in this field.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Locate events, identify actors, contextualize and discuss problems of the History of Portugal

Program

1. Economic and social structures at the end of the Ancien Regime.

2. The French Revolution influences, the "continental system" and the Napoleonic Wars; the Portuguese royal family and the court fled to Brazil and its repercussions.

3. First liberalism: the 1820's constitutionalist revolution, the Constitution (1822). The loss of Brazil.

4. The absolutist insurrection, civil war. Second liberalism. Social reforms.

5. Septembrism, Chartism, constitutional divergences and social-political conflicts.

6. Regeneration and the liberal peace. The Fontismo and the policy of material improvements.

7. The economic and social structures; the national market; population and emigration.

8. Romanticism: authors and works.

9. New political and ideological representations: iberianism, republicanism, socialism. The new generations.

10. Public education; science and positivism; new manifestations in art and culture.

11. The overseas and colonialism.

12. The 1890's political crisis: ultimatum, Republican revolution of 01/31/1891.

13. The 1892's economic crisis. The erosion of constitutional monarchy in the late nineteenth century.
