Objectives

1. Deepen, develop and acquire methodological skills to investigate and reflect on issues of Medieval History.

2. Produce an individual research project on a topic of Medieval History, to develop and complete in the corresponding course of the 2nd. Semester

Learning outcomes and competences


1. Become familiar with the research methods and techniques used in medieval history and develop the skills needed to produce a research report;

2. Have a good knowledge of the most recent topics and bibliographic references in Medieval History;

3. Be able to produce a research report on a topic in Medieval History.

“The Ages of the Middle”: topics, methods, and issues.

1.Introduction: basic concepts in Medieval History.

2. Research and Work Methodologies

2.1. Time and space: chronologies and maps of the medieval period;

2.2.The main printed and manuscript sources (Portuguese and foreign archives and the most important document and published sources collections);

2.3 Main research tools;

2.4 How to write a research paper: a. Selecting the topic b. Organising the paper c. Collecting and processing information d. Collecting bibliography and reading e. Writing and presenting the paper.

3. Processing sources: selecting and analysing document and narrative sources.

4. Systematization and data processing.

5. Construction of databases

6. Support the preparation of individual reports.

Eligibility for exams

75% class attendance (unless established otherwise by law - See article 9 in the Assessment Regulations).

Calculation formula of final grade

Classification, according to the following parameters:

- Presentation of the draft written - 15%.

- Presentation and justification of sources and selected bibliography - 35%.

- Presentation of the developed version of the project (abstract / index, detailed list of documentary sources, bibliography, general and specific, and state of the art) - 50%.

All students must fulfill the various time points previously established.

Not applicable.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

All students subject to special arrangements must comply with all assessment components, In accordance with the regulations in force applicable to their specific cases. In each case, the lecturer will seek the assistance of SAED.

Classification improvement

The student may ask to improve the grades in the scientific report and its public presentation, respecting the assessment regulations in force.
