Objectives

1. To acquire the methodological skills needed to identify and investigate issues in contemporary history. 2. To produce a research report on a specific issue in contemporary history.

Learning outcomes and competences

1. Ability to write a report of research in contemporary history. 2. Ability to public presentation of results of a historical research project.

Program (Seminar) 1. The production of a research report: 1.1. Structuration and writing of a research report; 1.2. Presentation of the object, the «state of the art» and research goals; 1.3. Presentation of outcomes from the empirical research; 1.4. Conclusions and open problems; 2. Formal issues in the elaboration of the research report: 2.1. Transcripts, quotations, bibliographical and documentary referral; 2.2. Selection and presentation of illustrations, graphical representations and paintings; 2.3. Selection and presentation of annexes and documentary appendices; 3. Public presentation of the research report: 3.1. Presentation content and structure; 3.2. «Powerpoint» presentation. Program (Laboratory Practices): Orientation and discussion of research works developed by the students about Portuguese contemporary History, including the debate about essential bibliography, the orientation of research about information sources, the treatment and analysis of information and the elaboration of a research.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical/Practical classes will be devoted to the presentation of concepts, as well as theoretical and methodological issues related to the subject. Texts, graphs, statistics and other material will be used to aid the presentations in an effort to promote students’ critical participations in the ongoing discussion. In tutorial classes, students will receive help with their research projects, specifically with research design, main bibliography, sources of information, processing and analysing data, and writing their research reports.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final mark = 80% RI + 20% AP; RI = research report (approx. 20 pages); AP = public presentation and discussion of research before a jury of 2 teachers.

 

Examinations or Special Assignments

Bearing in mind the characteristics of this course unit, no Special exams and assessments are previewed. All students, even the special cases established in the Assessment Regulations regarding eligibility for exams, must do the 2 assessments.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

All students with special arrangements, although not required to do all planned assessment components, may do so in accordance with the regulations applicable to their specific cases. At the beginning of the academic year, the lecturer can make arrangements with these students to decide on how they can do these 2 assessments, according to the specific cases, and, if necessary, seek the assistance of SAED.

Classification improvement

The student may ask to improve the grades in the final assessment components previewed for the course unit (written research report and public presentation), and redo or repeat any of these assessments.

Observations

In the case of foreign students, the assessment components defined may, if necessary, be presented in Spanish, English or French.
